Students Soar with the High-Flying Communities Award

12 July 2024

Three lucky students at North Notts College were recently taken on an unforgettable pilot training experience after winning the High-Flying Communities Award. Open to all students across RNN Group, this programme goes beyond just grades, recognising well-rounded students with a commitment to their community.

Before taking flight, students with stellar attendance records proposed creative solutions that would engage young people in their communities. Twelve shortlisted applicants were chosen based on their most impactful and innovative proposals. Winners were then given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to fly a light aircraft with Quiet Tiget Aviation.

Chris Hives, director of Quiet Tiger Aviation, kicked off the day with a comprehensive briefing at Nottingham City Airport. Students delved into the world of aviation, learning about restricted airspaces, navigating flight maps, and crucial pre-flight checks conducted by pilots. This informative session provided valuable insight into the pilot’s role and the complexities of air travel.

But the real thrill came after the briefing. Under the watchful eye of Chris and his crew, each student took the controls! They taxied the plane, took off, and even flew over their local areas. This personalised experience allowed them to see their homes and communities from a bird’s-eye perspective.

“Beyond offering an exhilarating experience, the experience provided valuable insights into student engagement and interests. While hypothetical, the project proposals offered valuable feedback to better connect with the student body, which has already proved invaluable in shaping enrichment.”
