If you have a talent for applying make-up, there are a number of different areas that you could enter as a career. TV, theatre, weddings, salons, all offer a unique setting in which to establish your skills.

More than likely, you will need to set up as a freelancer and so be prepared to run your own business early on. Hours can be long and sometimes unusual, particularly in theatre where you’ll be required to be there until late in the evening.

You will start as a junior and learn your craft on the job. As part of your job you will likely need to create and recreate designs for continuity and also maintain things like wigs and products for use each day, so good organisational skills are essential.

Competition can be fierce so networking is critical, but strong talent and determination can lead to a successful career.
