North Notts College Student Reaches the Final of World Skills UK
We are proud to announce that North Notts College student Kate Storey, has booked her place in the WorldSkills UK Competition final.
Studying Media Make-up at Level 5, Kate bested College students from around the country in two qualifying rounds. She will now have the opportunity to pit herself against the other finalists, in the category of Creative Media Make-up, in the WorldSkills UK finals taking place between the 9th and 19th of November.
Speaking about her journey so far, Kate said: “It’s all been a bit crazy! I didn’t think I would make it this far, but I’m super proud to have reached the final and can’t wait to compete again.”
WorldSkills UK, part of WorldSkills, is a charity and partnership between employers, educational organisations and governments, which seeks to raise standards in apprenticeships and technical education. Through WorldSkills UK “Skills Competitions”, students such as Kate can showcase their abilities on a national level and take their talents to new heights.
In the Skills Competitions qualifying round, Kate was tasked with creating a piece of work under the theme of; “Living the dream”.
When asked about the qualifying task, Kate commented: “The brief that we got from the judges was quite broad, which suited me very well. I decided to go with quite a dark theme, where I wanted to create a look inspired by horror films. I took inspiration from some of my favourite films and artists.
“I really wanted to create a piece on something that I was passionate about. I think passion is the most important thing when you’re working in Media Make-up.”
Kate further emphasised the importance of working with her passion, adding: “My favourite module at College was working with body art. I realised I had this passion for it and just loved working with it.
“Being able to apply the skills, knowledge and passion we learn at College at the WorldSkills competitions is really nice.”
Speaking about what the future holds for her, Kate said: “I want to go into a career in theatre. I love being backstage and I’ve worked with a few dance companies and also the Operatic Society in Worksop, so I feel like the skills that I learn at College can be applied at work, and the bits of experience I pick up at work can help me at College too.
“There is a really good balance between work and College in that sense!”
North Notts College Assistant Principal, Angela Bates, spoke about the importance of Skills Competitions and how they can help further students’ abilities for the future.
She said: “The Skills Competitions are a brilliant way for students to display the amazing skills that they develop whilst at College. We have a strong history of students competing in this competition and we are immensely proud of Kate who continues our story with World Skills.”
The skills competition final will see Kate and seven other finalists go head to head for the chance to win Gold, Silver and Bronze medals in the category Creative Media Make-up.
