Students Create Decorative Tealight Holders in Aid of Local Charity
Charitable students from North Notts College’s Media Make-up courses at Retford Post-16 Centre have been showcasing their creativity in a social action project to raise funds for Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice.
The project has seen students from all levels of the Media Make-up courses, including Retford Oaks pupils on the GCSE school links programme, create and decorate festive-inspired homemade tealight holders.
Retford Oaks Level 2 Certificate in Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy pupil Kristen Proctor created a tealight holder that will complement the festive decorations at home.
Kristen said: “I’ve created a Nordic-inspired tealight holder; I thought it would fit with the theme that my mum is creating at home. I’ll be paying the £1 donation to the charity so that I can keep what I’ve made.”
Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice in North Anston support children and young adults whose lives are sadly too short. They believe that every family deserves to make magical memories with their child. The costs of running their services are substantial, and over 90% of their funds are raised through charitable donations.
Donations from the Media Make-up groups at Retford Post-16 Centre have raised £43 for the local charity, with further fundraising planned at the Worksop campus of North Notts College.
North Notts College Progress Tutor Kim Coulthard arranged the activity and will be passing the donations to the charity.
Kim said: “I think it’s important for our students to gain a range of experiences and play a part in our local communities.
“Fundraising and social action projects are a great way for them to get involved and make a difference and are also a great opportunity to develop new skills and be creative in a different way to the demands of their course. College is about much more than gaining knowledge and skills for an area of study, we want to provide a broad range of experiences that students can enjoy and learn from.”
