North Notts College students showcase talent at World Skills UK event
North Notts College Media Make-up students, including those who study North Notts College courses at the Retford Post 16 Centre, have showcased their talent to thousands of visitors at the prestigious World Skills UK event held at the NEC in Birmingham.
Creating detailed prosthetics and make-up effects, Level 3 Diploma in Fashion and Theatrical Media Make-up students Lauren Woodward and Chantelle Griffiths held an exhibition encouraging visitor participation and to display the range of skills they have learnt throughout their time at North Notts College.
Chantelle and Lauren also provided advice to many secondary school students currently thinking about what they’d like to do with their futures.
Student Chantelle said: “I’ve been making prosthetics and a Coraline-inspired facial make-up. I’ve enjoyed showing people how to apply latex; it’s not as scary as you think – it’s quite easy. I really enjoyed showing my skills to the audience of both families and schools. Other than practical skills, I have gained the confidence to be able to talk about what I’m doing and really showcase myself.
“I would definitely recommend studying a make-up course as it is a real confidence booster as well as providing you with new skills to use in a future career.”
Hair and Beauty Curriculum Manager, Claire Bunclark, was present at the World Skills Event to support her department and oversee student engagement with visitors.
Recognising student participation, Claire Bunclark said, “The students who worked on the showcases were presenting their practical and wider communication skills with members of the public and professionals within a wide industry set. Visiting staff from other schools and colleges were commenting on the professional skills of our learners.”
Make-up tutor, Kirsty Lewin, helped supervise the students whilst at the event. She added: “The students showed visitors a wide range of technical makeup skills from special effects to full looks and hair dressing. The most enjoyable experience I had at the event was spending time with all the students who took part in showcasing their talent at the event – seeing their skills and being fantastic ambassadors for the North Notts college sites of Worksop and Retford.”
