National Competition Success for Media Make-Up Student

25 August 2020

North Notts College student Phoebe Longworth, who studies Level 3 Fashion, Theatre and Media Make-up at the Retford Post-16 Centre, is celebrating a recent success in a national competition organised by Warpaint magazine.

The #LetYourBeautyGlow competition, sponsored by Dr. PawPaw and run through the magazine’s Instagram account attracted entrants from across the country. Each entrant was challenged to create a vegan-inspired look that took inspiration from what is grown on our planet.

Talking about her experience in the competition Phoebe said: “I wanted to create a look that was bright and colourful, I created quite a summery, yet earthy, look. With the brief being to create a vegan-inspired look it’s a cause that means a lot to me, myself and my family are all vegan, which I think helped me connect with the competition.

“In the past I have always been a bit nervous to share my work and put my looks out there, I was scared what people would think. It’s amazing to have won and such a confidence boost for me.”

The competition was judged by Armand Beasley, a cruelty free make-up artist who has worked with famous faces including Goldie Hawn, Nicole Scherzinger, Michelle Keegan and Gok Wan. His work has been featured in magazines including Grazia, Harpers Bazaar, Now and Closer.

Armand loved the way Phoebe incorporated nature into a striking beauty look. He said The pop of contrasting colours that frame the features along with the delicate freckles merge human with Mother Nature. I also love the stunning artwork on the neck – a cross between a Van Gogh summer meadow and the fiery depths of the earth. Bravo!

Looking to the future Phoebe plans to continue studying, but has grown in confidence and hopes to show her work to a much wider audience, she explains: “I’m going to continue studying, I’ll start my HNC in Specialist Make-up at Retford Post-16 Centre in September. I’ve also applied to be on Glow Up: Britain’s Next Make-up Star. Hopefully I’ll get on the show and see how far I can go!”

Phoebe’s new-found confidence, she says, is not only because of her success in competitions but because of the support offered by her tutors, she adds: “Karen Connole has always helped me, and encouraged me, she always tells me that any experience is always good and to just go for it. I’ve also had so much support from Anne (Derbyshire) she helps me find competitions and is always a great help with ideas.”

North Notts College Hair and Beauty Lecturer Anne Derbyshire has watched Phoebe grow in confidence.

Anne said: “Phoebe is incredibly talented and she creates some incredibly striking looks. Back in March she won an Inter-College competition after creating a look inspired by the #BeKind movement. The standard of work she created for the Warpaint competition was outstanding.

“The feedback she received from Armand is incredible. She should be so proud of herself and use these recent successes to really push-on and show us all just how good she is.”
