British Army Visits North Notts College

Recently, a member of the British Army, Simon Collins dropped into classes around North Notts College to deliver talks and inspire students.

Simon Collins, who is currently part of the Royal Lancers (Queen Elizabeth’s Own) has over 17 years worth of experience working in the field.  During his visit, Simon spoke to students about his own experiences of being in the Army and how they have supported him to grow in his career. A presentation was held to showcase the benefits of working for the Army and how students can join up. He also spoke about the wide range of career paths available and the many apprenticeships that are available in the areas of; Engineering, Medical, Intelligence and Comms, HR and Finance, Logistics and Supply, and Combat.

Speaking on this, Simon said: “Coming into places like this helps to educate people on what opportunities are available through the military. Everybody has the mentality that the Army is all about combat and leads to no future prospects, however, this is simply not the case. There is a lot more out there and you do get qualifications out of every single role which are often fully funded.”

“Students who complete relevant courses here at College have the advantage of being ahead of their peers. Having existing knowledge means they can go on to be an instructor, which can help them jump start their career in the army and ultimately lead to early promotion.”

It is not every day you get to sit down with a member of the British Army, but this is exactly what Construction student, Hans-Curtis Gulson was able to do this week.

Hans said: “I have found today intriguing and have learned some facts about the army that I did not know before. It is good to know that skills like construction are future-proof and are highly regarded in the army.”
