Bright Futures: Carlton Youth Centre Project
Over three weeks, construction students from North Notts College embarked on a community work placement project at the Carlton Youth Centre (CYC). Armed with paintbrushes, tools, and a ton of enthusiasm they undertook various tasks, turning the once gloomy building into a vibrant hub where young people can thrive.
Leading this initiative was Volunteer It Yourself (VIY), a national charity dedicated to empowering young people with trade skills while revitalising community spaces. Recognising the potential for positive change, VIY partnered with North Notts College to create a hands-on learning experience in construction. Following investment from the Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) through Bassetlaw District Council, match-funded by VIY partner Sport England, CYC became the canvas for their latest project. Paint in an array of inspirational colours was also donated by VIY trade partner, Dulux.
Carlton Youth Centre (CYC) is a voluntary youth centre run by Nottinghamshire County Council youth workers and volunteers. Open five nights a week, with over 250 memberships, they have been running activities for young people in Bassetlaw since 1982. CYC is an essential service, providing guidance, information, mental wellbeing activities, promoting healthy lifestyles, and not forgetting FUN for some of the most deprived areas of Nottinghamshire.
Among those involved were Level 1 students studying Joinery and Bricklaying. During their placement, they meticulously redecorated the entire building, doing everything from installing hardware to laying new carpet tiles. An innovative touch saw an old DJ deck stand transformed into a bandstand, providing aspiring musicians with a space to hone their talents. Back in 2018, bricklaying students also crafted a walled garden complete with a pizza oven, which has remained a staple ever since, especially in warmer months. Read more about the garden project
A special celebration on 28 March 2024 was held at the centre, honouring all the students’ hard work. Attendees included students, faculty staff, stakeholders, and local community supporters. Speakers praised the collaborative spirit driving the project’s success, extending special recognition to the Carlton Youth Centre for their unwavering support. Gratitude was also expressed to local businesses and sponsors for their instrumental role in providing building materials.
As the celebration drew to a close, a sense of accomplishment filled the air. Transformed into a buzzing community hub, CYC now brims with potential. The future looks brighter than ever, thanks to the dedication and collaborative spirit of all involved.
“This transformation goes beyond bricks and mortar. It’s about creating a space where young people can thrive, learn, and connect with one another. Their commitment to this project has been nothing short of inspiring. Not only have they honed their construction skills, but they’ve also breathed new life into the heart of our community.”
