Garden party marks completion of Carlton Youth Centre project

The completion of North Notts College’s Carlton Youth Centre project was marked with a garden party to officially open the reformed space. Staff and students that worked on the project were in attendance amongst members of the youth club, local employers and Bassetlaw MP John Mann.

From start to finish, over 120 Construction students worked on the build. Harry Smith, Level 2 Joinery student, was involved in the early stages of the project helping to level out the ground. Harry said: “I hope the project will encourage more people to go outside because the garden wasn’t really used that much before. I hope this will bring everyone together.”

The Construction students were already making the most of the new space and the weather with a game of football. The students also helped to make pizzas from scratch for the guests.

A plaque is on display in the garden to recognise the students’ hard work. Before unveiling the plaque, John Mann emphasised how impressed he was with the overall quality of the work.

The project has had support from many local employers including Jones Homes, a local construction company, who donated £500 and Wilko who supplied an assortment of plants. Sandra Jackson, a representative from Wilko, said: “This is a great example of all members of the community pulling together from all different areas, whether it’s the college, the youth club or local employers it’s been fantastic.”

The space includes a nature path with wild flowers, bird boxes and a seating area, as well as a central space designed as a chessboard big enough to also accommodate a stage for outdoor summer performances.

The Construction department intend to return to the project in the future, due to delays caused by the Beast from the East.
