From challenges to opportunities: How North Notts College helped Mariam start over

Mariam came to the UK from Ukraine because of the war. Facing a new country, language barriers, and a different education system, she was unsure how to rebuild her career.

But North Notts College offered a welcoming environment, practical courses, and support that helped her start fresh and thrive.

Why did you choose to study North Notts College?

“When I was looking for English courses, I liked North Notts College right away. The application process was simple and clear, which made things less stressful.

My English teacher Grace, made learning the language much easier and more enjoyable. Her classes are so good that I still attend them and keep improving my skills.”

“After my interview at North Notts College, I knew this was the right place for me.”

“The course content was well-structured, and the practical assignments were exactly what I needed to gain real-world experience.”

What courses have you studied during your time at college?

“After building my English skills, I decided to enroll in the Level 3 Digital Marketing course. I applied to several colleges, but after my interview at North Notts College, I knew this was the right place for me. The course content was well-structured, and the practical assignments were exactly what I needed to gain real-world experience.

The lessons were engaging and well-structured, combining team projects and individual assignments. We covered everything from designing advertising mock-ups and writing broadcast scripts to developing full marketing strategies for businesses. Event planning was also part of the process, teaching us how to organise campaigns, manage timelines, and solve problems creativity.

This hands-on approach gave me valuable skills and confidence.”

How has the College supported you through your courses?

“The College has been very supportive throughout my studies. Whenever I struggled with the language or needed help with the course, my tutors were always there for me.

Paul, Richard, Safida and Grant made learning easier and were always ready to help and answer questions. They also gave me practical advice that helped me focus on the most important aspects of my studies and my career.”

What made you want to become a student ambassador?

“I became a student ambassador because I really enjoy studying here and wanted to help others who are making the same decisions. I know how hard it can be to choose the right course or settle into a new place.

As an ambassador, I take part in open days and career fairs, sharing my experience with new students. I like helping people, and it also helps me improve my communication skills.”

Do you have any advice for someone considering becoming a student ambassador?

Absolutely! Being a student ambassador is a great way to develop useful skills like communication, problem-solving, and time management.

At first, I was nervous about talking to strangers in English, but this role helped me overcome that fear. It’s a great way to get experience, meet people, and grow your confidence.”

What do you plan to do next? What does the future look like?

“I’m currently volunteering in the College’s marketing department, where I get real hands-on experience. This helps me learn even more about digital marketing. In the future, I plan to go to university to continue studying Digital Marketing. I’m excited to keep learning and building my career.

By doing all of this, I’m also showing my daughter that it’s never too late to learn, change, and improve yourself. I want her to see that no matter how hard things get, you can always take steps to grow and create a better future.

North Notts College gave me the support and opportunities I needed to start over, and I’m thankful to everyone who helped me along the way.”
